Schaumburg To Turn Off A Red Light Camera (For 6 Month Review)

March 19th, 2009  |  by Brian Costin Published in Blog, Public Safety, Transportation  |  4 Comments

The Schaumburg Freedom Coalition scored a major victory in getting the Village of Schaumburg to turn off a right turn lane red light camera that was responsible for 98% of the over $1,000,000 in tickets that were written over the past 3 months at the corner of Meacham and Woodfield Rd. The camera will be turned off for 6 months while the Village installs a right turn lane arrow. The Village will review the red light camera issue again after the 6 months expires. I suspect they will turn the camera back on at that point. This despite the overwhelming evidence the red light cameras make intersections less safe and extending yellow lights make intersections safer and reduce red light running.

Meanwhile, the Village has continued their plans to install up to 9 additional cameras across the Village. Below is an article from the Daily Herald on the Schaumburg Freedom Coalitions efforts to improve traffic safety and remove dangerous red-light cameras.

Schaumburg to take down red light camera:
Residents applaud decision, but don’t like plans for more

Schaumburg officials received both praise and scorn Tuesday night over two actions related to their red-light camera policy.

What a couple of residents found praiseworthy was the village board’s decision to deactivate a controversial camera at Meacham and Woodfield roads that generated nearly $1 million in fines just from drivers who failed to come to a complete stop before turning right on red.

But the same residents objected that trustees also applied to the Illinois Department of Transportation to install further cameras at state-owned intersections in other parts of the village.

“It’s one step forward, nine steps back, because they want to put in nine more cameras,” resident Brian Costin said.

He and fellow resident Robert Garrett handed out pamphlets opposing red light cameras to other members of the public in the village hall parking lot. Several cars sported windshield signs reading: “Red Light Camera – the most profitable safety program in existence.”

Trustees agreed in committee last week to concur with a staff recommendation to take down the camera which had created so much buzz over the revenue it had collected.

Still in place, though, are cameras to catch drivers proceeding directly through an intersection on a red light. Of the 10,000 drivers who received $100 tickets between mid-November and early February, about 98 percent were from turning right on red without stopping.

Some members of the public expressed reluctance to return to Schaumburg’s commercial district after being hit with the $100 tickets.

“I wouldn’t want to be a business owner near a red light camera because it might hurt my business,” Costin said.

He also claimed that statistical information showed that accidents paradoxically increase at intersections monitored by red light cameras.

Trustee Tom Dailly debated with Costin over whether it made any difference between an intersection being monitored by a police officer or a red light camera.

Costin said it was also an issue of civil liberties as police ticket the drivers of cars while red light cameras ticket only the owners of cars.

I find it funny that you take credit for this when in reality you had nothing at all to do with it. Grow up & get a life little boy & go whine to mommy

Sure. The Schaumburg Freedom Coalition was the only organization that was fighting the red light cameras before they went in. We were the only organization who was fighting for its removal when it went in. We were the first to reveal the $700K in fines over the first 38 days. We were the ones that led a letter writing campaign to the Village about turning off the red light cameras.

If it wasn’t us that caused the red light camera’s to be shut off then who was it? I would like to meet them and shake their hand and find out how they did it. Especially without going to the Village board meetings, being known to the public, the newspapers or anything like that.

Stupid Joe. I think he’s the kid.

Anyways, I glad you posted this article.
I’m all for these cameras if each suspected violation goes through a manual review with human eyes looking at it. Then we can say, “yeah that moron did not stop” after looking at video. I seriously hate all those idiotic drivers that don’t stop and think they have the right of the way to make a right turn when they have a red. I can’t tell you how many times I go through an intersection (with a green)… and see these people decide to stop at the last minute when they see me coming. Their whole front half of the car is already in the damn intersection! All this crap really doesn’t reduce accidents anyway, because there are also those idiots that make the turn and think they can floor it without me hitting them in the back. Why should I have to put on the brakes when they are not suppose to turn?

The only reason is because I drive a Lexus and they drive a Honda.

    by the way
BOB ROHMAN SCHAUMBURG HONDA IS A HORRIBLE DEALERSHIP!!!!

So on a more serious note. SFC is protecting its citizens from fines we don’t need. I would ask for you guys to fight against the nine more cameras that will go up. Yes its a selfish gesture, only because in my opinion I think the camera system is not accurate because sensors terminate at the line. Basically its says that cars are not stopping.

Read this carefully… And I have to remind you that this is Schaumburg/Chicago 2nd highest in the nation for traffic congestion.

How in the whole world can 7400 drivers get picked and then 7099 or so get fined? Do that many cars, pass through a red light in 5 weeks???

This based on: “Red Speed Illinois sent 7,403 violations to the Village of Schaumburg, of which 7,099 were approved. Collecting $133,231.98 in new revenue from Nov 16th to Dec 23rd.”
