Schaumburg police: Man tried to lure child into van (Chicago Tribune)

The Schaumburg Police Department is looking for a man they say attempted to lure a child into his van Saturday.
schaumburgpicture.jpgThe incident occurred about 1 p.m. Saturday in the area of Syracuse Lane and Vassar Lane in the northwest suburb, according to a release from the department. The man approached an 11-year-old girl walking her dog and asked her to get into his van to help him look for his dog.The girl said no and moved away, police said. The man then raised his voice and told the girl to get into his van; she ran and told her parents. The man never left the van, police said, and he left the area in an unknown direction.

The man is described as a white male, about 30 with dark hair with light streaks. His hair is combed back with gel, he has a ring in his pierced right nostril and he was wearing a checkered shirt. The van was a dark blue, full-size conversion van; no license plate is known.

Anyone with information about the incident or the man being sought should call the Schaumburg Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau at (847) 882-3534.

In reading this article, I was brought back to a letter my son’s school in Beach Park, IL sent out yesterday. Although the descriptions very, in a less than observant child’s eye, these 2 men could very well be the same suspect.

The following information is what we have to share as of Monday, March 16, 2009:

On Gilbert Avenue north of Hart Avenue, a subject in an older model mini-van attempted to lure a child into the mini-van. When the child ran away, the mini-van pulled into a driveway on Gilbert Avenue then left in the opposite direction. The suspect was in a green/blue mini-van with a picture of a skull on the back window (may be a sticker). The suspect was described as a young white male with orange or red spiked hair. There were tattoos on the left arm of flames and swirls and he was wearing a gray tank top.

The Sheriff’s Department has increased patrols in the area and is continuing the investigation. We would encourage you to be aware of any unusual activity in your neighborhood. If you see any suspicious behavior, please report it to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department at 1-847-377-4000 and to your school as well so we can follow-up with the information.
