Village won’t let mall owner fix property

The Daily Herald is reporting on a story that affects each and every one of us. The Village Board’s designs on the site of the mall at Schaumburg and Roselle roads have prohibited its owner from making repairs and may cause a number of successful businesses to go bust.

The money quotes from the article:

While the current building does serve its tenants well from an economic standpoint, it doesn’t work for the whole function of the intersection and the business district it lies in, Huff said.

The adjacent lot has been vacant for at least 20 years, and the only proposals offered for it are gas stations and fast food restaurants, neither of which the village wants for that spot, Huff said.
The new building would maximize the potential for the whole area, he added.

This is about the most despicable act a government can commit. To ban a property owner from rehabbing his property, then deciding to condemn the property and sell it to a “preferred” private re-developer is just absolutely classless.

I was at a village board meeting where Mayor Larson called the building a “slum”. I don’t mean to point out the obvious but if a property owner is effectively banned from improving his property because the village won’t issue him the proper permits then what is a person supposed to do?

The village trustees and Mayor Al Larson are demonstrating that they have no respect for property rights, and that they are more than willing to sell out Schaumburg’s citizens to the big developers.

Hopefully, the Schaumburg Freedom Coalition will be there in some way to help stop this from happening.

At a recent board I asked the village board to not approve the $9 Million bond that would finance the forcible condemnation. Instead, I proposed that the village should put the issue on the 2009 municipal election ballot and let the people vote on the issue. The board voted unaniomously to proceed with the forcible condemnation and removal of honest business men and women from our community. Without voter approval.

The trustees that voted for this bond issue and eminent domain abuse, they names are George Dunham, Jack Sullivan, Mark Madej, Marge Connelly, Tom Dailly, and Hank Curcio. Mayor Al Larson also supported this measure.

Well, at least we know who not to vote for next time.
