Schaumburg’s Costin Slams Cook County Red Light Cameras as Irresponsible

Points to data showing Red Light Cameras don’t work, will support ban on red light cameras in Schaumburg.
SCHAUMBURG- Schaumburg mayoral candidate, Brian Costin, criticized Cook County for their decision to place six red light cameras in Schaumburg—for a total of thirty new cameras in Cook County.
Costin said, “Cook County should stop treating its citizens as cash machines. The red light controversy shouldn’t be about the Arizona companies selling red light cameras. The real issue is about government agencies making dubious safety claims and profiting off of red light cameras.”
“And at least nine studies show that installing red light cameras actually make intersections more dangerous—not safer. If Cook County government’s goal was to improve traffic safety, they would extend the duration of yellow lights, a method proven highly successful elsewhere. ”
“The red light companies are advising elected officials to install cameras where no safety problems exist. Red Speed Illinois, who won a portion of the Cook County contract, advised the Mayor Larson and the Schaumburg village board to install a red light camera at an intersection that had zero accidents caused by red light running in the year prior to the camera being installed.”
Costin said, “As we learned in Schaumburg, some politicians will put the cameras anywhere they think they can make a quick buck. Only when the citizens of Schaumburg became outraged at the program did the Village decide to remove them. I question the decision of the Cook County government to put six of those cameras in Schaumburg. That’s twice as many as any other community.
Was the County Board’s decision based on improving the safety of the thirty most dangerous county intersections? Are Schaumburg drivers worse than other Cook County drivers? Or was the decision on where to install the cameras based instead on reaching out to untapped revenue sources?”
As a candidate for Mayor of Schaumburg Costin has pledged support for a future ordinance to ban red light cameras and/or any other legal remedy to remove red light cameras from Schaumburg.
Costin, president of the Schaumburg Freedom Coalition, led a successful charge to remove Schaumburg’s red light cameras in 2009. Costin testified against red light cameras in front of the Illinois Senate Transportation Subcommittee on Red Light Cameras on March 2nd, 2010.

You should have the lights there. You ever see how many Jerks blow the lights and just turn or red and never stop!!!
But of coarse its always the Cook Countys fault. Not the drivers that break the law and should get the tickets.
