Costin Demands Convention Center Transparency & Campaign Reform

The Schaumburg mayoral race heated up this week when a candidate publicly linked the mayor with an Inverness businessman who was recently indicted for bid rigging in Chicago.

Even though the race for Schaumburg’s top spot is more than a year away, mayoral candidate Brian Costin demanded Mayor Al Larson stop taking campaign donations from those involved with the Schaumburg Convention Center and that the village post the center’s contract bids on the village’s Web site.

Costin’s demands stem from an indictment this month of Inverness resident William Anthony Degironemo for his alleged criminal involvement with contract deals at Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center.

Based on campaign disclosure information, Degironemo had contributed to Larson’s campaign, which now throws all of the center’s contract bids into question, even though there has been no allegations against the Schaumburg center of any wrongdoing, Costin said.

“If you have someone who’s involved with fixing contracts and he’s donating to Larson’s campaign, it raises questions,” Costin said…

Costin also criticized the mayor for other campaign donations.

Besides taking money from Degironemo, Costin said, Larson has accepted about $17,500 in campaign donations over the years from the convention center and companies involved with the center. Costin said the mayor should not accept such donations and the money he has accepted should be donated to the village’s general fund.

“I would not take such campaign donations,” Costin said. “We have a very different code of ethics and there’s a big difference between how he runs the village of Schaumburg and how I’d run it.”
