Says 14 Tax Hikes in 10 Years Excessive. Calls for Spending Caps and Repeal of Property Tax.

SCHAUMBURG- Government watchdog award winner and Schaumburg mayoral candidate, Brian Costin, criticized Mayor Larson and the Village Trustees for their recent passing of a new $184.5 million annual budget. The 2010-11 fiscal year budget is $30.7 million more than Schaumburg’s 2008-09 spending, and $14.6 million more than what was spent just last year.

Costin said, “In a recession when many families and business in Schaumburg are struggling to keep their heads above water Mayor Larson and the Village Board, led by senior trustee George Dunham, have increased spending by almost 20% in just 2 years, and enacted a punishing new property tax to pay for their uncontrolled spending habits.”

“Since Larson was first elected Mayor in 1987, the Village of Schaumburg’s annual expenditures have nearly quadrupled in size, even after adjusting for inflation and population growth. Growth in government spending is recklessly out of control.”

“The new property tax is the 14th tax increase Mayor Larson and the Village Board has enacted since 2000.”

“In a very tough recession where many are struggling, the new property tax will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for many families and businesses in Schaumburg. It is time the taxpayer’s say enough is enough”

“The Village of Schaumburg needs to cap spending increases at the rate of inflation times population growth. If the Village enacted a cap just two years ago we could have entirely avoided the municipal property tax in the first place.”

Costin has pledged to repeal the property tax and enact laws that would require any future tax hike proposals to be voted on by the citizens of Schaumburg via referendum.
