Schaumburg Board Meeting Preview: February 24, 2009

Here are some notes from the Meeting Agenda of Tuesday’s Village Board meeting that occurred on February 24, 2009 at 8PM, Schaumburg Village Hall.

Meeting Agenda

1. RED LIGHT PHOTO ENFORCEMENT – IDOT HOLD HARMLESS RESOLUTION – [motion] to recommend to the Village Board to approve the resolution agreeing to indemnify the State of Illinois for photo enforcement equipment attached to IDOT facilities.

This means that Schaumburg is moving forward with other Red Light Camera plans at other intersections across Schaumburg at the same time they are backtracking on the original red light camera. Are they hoping no one noticed they slipped this one in there? Trust me the people of Schaumburg will notice. Our last red-light camera story is the most read article on this site.

2. PROGRESS/UPDATE ON RED LIGHT CAMERA ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM – [motion] to recommend to the Village Board that the right turn on red violation camera be disconnected at Woodfield and Meacham Roads. That straight through photo enforcement continue and that it should be evaluated again in six (6) months.  That a green turn arrow for right turns be installed where appropriate at this intersection.

This proposal by the Village Board should be commended. The temporary turning off of the turn lane camera makes sense & the right turn green arrow signal will improve safety.

3. CONTRACT RENEWAL FOR FIRE ALARM & SUPPRESSION SYSTEM - [motion] to recommend the Village Board approve the first year extension of the Fire Alarm & Suppression System contract with Fox Valley Fire & Safety, Elgin, IL for a one (1) year period from May 1, 2009 through April 30, 2010 in a total amount not to exceed the approved FY 09/10 budget.

No particular stance on this one, but it is worth noting that Mayor Larson received campaign contributions from this company in the past.

4. ALEXIAN FIELD STADIUM PAINTING – AWARD OF BID – [motion] to recommend the Village Board award the bid for the Alexian Field Stadium Painting to the lowest responsible and responsive bidder, ERA Valdivia of Chicago, IL, and authorize issuing a Purchase Order in the amount of $485,000.00 for this work.

The Village is sending more money into this project that has become an economic sinkhole. $485K is more than the gate returns for all of last year. Total rental income on the 2008 Schaumburg CAFR showed only $136K and $80K for naming rights (Page 145) and costs. This project would be fundamentally bankrupt if it were not for the gigantic taxpayer subsidy given to it each year. Also, don’t forget about the property tax exemption and the mortgage that the Village of Schaumburg paid off for the site.

It also should be noted that the company named, Schaumburg Professional Baseball,  has given at least 8 donations totalling $2,890 to Mayor Al Larson’s campaign fund from 2000-2008.
